Heat wave : Maison du citoyen opens its doors to anyone who needs to cool off

Gatineau, July 6, 2020. – Because the health and safety of Gatineau residents is of paramount importance, Maison du citoyen will offer them a refuge from the heat in its air conditioned agora. Staff will be on hand to guide visitors needing to cool off.


Quick facts

●Maison du citoyen will be accessible as follows:
- Tuesday, July 7, from noon to 8 p.m.
- Wednesday, July 8 to Saturday, July 11, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
●Residents should enter behind galerie Montcalm, near the fountain.
●Before being admitted, visitors will be asked:
- a few questions about their health; and
- to wash their hands.
●Starting July 7, outdoor pools will be operating, on extended hours until the end of this heat wave.

In the current pandemic world, it is important to maintain the current physical distancing measures.

Heat wave safety tips

●Keep hydrated throughout the day:
- drinking at least one glass of water every 20 minutes is recommended; and
- a bottle of ice water or a drink with electrolytes is strongly suggested.
●Avoid direct exposure to the sun and use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
●Wear a hat or a cap.
●Wear light clothing that allows perspiration to evaporate, sunglasses and lip balm with sunscreen.
●If you are attending an outdoor event, try to limit your exposure to the sun, and try to stay in the shade.
●Never leave children, old people or pets unattended in a vehicle, even if the windows are open.
●Watch for the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion:
- dizziness;
- vertigo;
- headache;
- nausea;
- unusual tiredness;
- confusion;
- loss of balance;
- altered state of consciousness; or
- loss of consciousness.
●If you get heat stroke, immerse yourself fully clothed in the water to cool off.
