April 22, 2017 Status report on spring flooding and current operations

Gatineau, April 22, 2017. – Gatineau is getting ready to return to normal after the exceptional spring flooding. The situation is improving, and water levels are gradually falling or holding steady. Gatineau is about to set in motion the responses to the consequences of the spring flooding.

Statut report

Gatineau is continuing to monitor the situation closely. Water levels may remain high for part of next week.
Boulevard Hurtubise has been reopened to local traffic.
The transportation service offered to residents living on boulevard Hurtubise between Sabourin and Campeau will end this evening at 10 p.m.
To find out which streets are closed or open to local traffic, check the Web site for details on street closures.

The parking provided to displaced residents will remain available overnight:
-centre communautaire Saint-Jean-de-Brébeuf (70 rue Moreau); and
-pavillon de la Baie (rue des Montgolfières);
Gatineau will close the centre for displaced residents at the Jean-René-Monette community centre (89 rue Jean-René-Monette) at 10 p.m. tonight. After that, residents should call 311.
-No residents came by the centre today.
More than 2,500 sandbags are still available at the different distribution sites.
Gatineau will organize a special collection to pick up the sandbags. Additional information will be posted shortly on the municipal Web site.
Garbage collection in the flooded areas will return to normal starting on Monday.
Bicyclists should continue to avoid using the flooded pathways and bike paths.

Operations underway

The emergency measures coordination centre (CCMU) has been in operation 24/7 since Wednesday, April 19.
Municipal crews are continuing to inspect the streets and infrastructures hit by the spring flooding.
Clean-up and street sweeping operations have resumed.

Tips to residents after flooding

After a flood, residents should take certain precautions. Among other things, they should consult an electrician, a heating specialist or a qualified gas technician. Residents should check the Web site for additional information.
Owners of artesian wells must take special precautions during floods to maintain the quality of their water:
-Gatineau is providing free water testing to residents in the affected areas.
-Concerned residents can go to the wastewater treatment plant (Gatineau sector) from April 24 to 27. Check the Web site for the hours of operation.

Information session on financial assistance from the government for people and businesses affected by the flooding

An information session on the financial assistance offered is being organized by Quebec's ministère de la Sécurité publique for 7 p.m. on Monday, April 24 at the centre sportif de Gatineau

The Web site is kept up to date, and is the best source of information for residents.
