Flood update: Take advantage of the fine weather, but remain prudent
Gatineau, May 6, 2023. – While monitoring the situation, Gatineau has noticed that since last night, water levels have been stabilizing, as anticipated. The slow and gradual decrease should start early next week. All shoreline property owners must remain vigilant and leave the protections they installed in place because the situation continues to remain precarious. Watch out for waves ● | With the fine weather forecast for the weekend, Gatineau reminds everyone to avoid driving through the flooded areas, and to reduce their speed on roads that are under water. Fast and dense traffic creates waves that could cause more damage. |
● | The federal government has issued a prohibition against water craft on the Ottawa River on the Quebec side until further notice. The notice applies from the west end of L'Isle-aux-Allumettes to the MacDonald-Cartier Bridge, and from the Bridge to Masson-Angers. In addition, Sureté du Québec will be patrolling the waters throughout the weekend. |
● | The Service de police (SPVG) and the Service de sécurité incendie (SSIG) will be patrolling in and around the flooded areas to ensure that the public is aware of the impact of the waves on flood victims. |
Owners of artesian and surface wells ● | Water in artesian and surface wells located in a flooded area must be considered non potable. Affected residents should get a supply of drinking water from another source (for instance from a neighbour who is not affected, a water distribution system or bottled water), or boil their water for one minute before consuming it or using it for food preparation. |
