COVID-19 – Latest temporary layoffs
Gatineau, April 17, 2020. – The Province recently announced the extension of the closure of several public places until May 4, 2020. As a result of this extension, Gatineau will have to temporarily lay off white-collar employees working variable hours and casual blue-collar employees. Quick facts
● | These latest temporary layoffs affect 101 white-collar employees working variable hours in the libraries, and 67 casual blue-collar employees. |
● | This decision comes as a result of the closure of public places, which include municipal libraries, and the cancellation of various activities. Gatineau is complying with the instructions issued by the Province aimed at protecting the public's health. |
● | It is important to note that these are temporary layoffs, and that all of the employees in question maintain their employment relationship with Gatineau. Thus, they can be recalled once municipal activities resume as soon as the public health instructions allow. |
● | These temporary layoffs represent an exceptional measure stemming from the current pandemic situation. |
● | The layoffs come into effect on April 18, 2020, until which time the employees will continue to be paid. |
● | The necessary information will be provided to the affected employees to help them access the appropriate government programs. |
● | Gatineau is continuing to work in collaboration with the union locals on any resource reallocations. |
